Family recipes and binders

Start a recipe binder this weekend

One recipe, five dividers, and an index. The smallest version of a family cookbook that will actually get used.

By Chris Lee, home cook · 5 min · Updated 2026-10-03

Buy a one-inch binder or use the one in the closet. Print the heirloom page. Write the dish people ask for, in the cook's words if you have them.

Number the page. Put a line in the front that says the name and the page number. That is an index. You can pretty it up later.

Do not transcribe a whole box of cards this weekend. One page you trust is the proof you will continue. The full method is how to start a family recipe binder.

If you want dividers and an index already laid out, the binder download is the paid set. The free page is enough to start.
