Family recipes and binders
Recipe binder
A recipe binder is a working book: dividers you understand, an index in the front, and pages with the story next to the ingredients. It can start with one recipe and a set of page numbers.

In the portions written below, protein is about 36–40 g, calories about 420–490, and sodium about 180–310 mg. Those are rounded kitchen estimates before extra cheese, bread, or a heavy pour of sauce.
A pretty empty binder is a prop. Put tonight's dinner in it before you buy more dividers.
The free recipe card and the heirloom page on this site are the sheets to print first. The paid binder kit is a fuller set when you want the dividers and the index already laid out.
How to run it
- Get a one-inch binder and five dividers with names you actually use.
- Number ten pages, even if most are blank.
- Write one recipe you cook, including who it came from.
- Add that title to the index in the front.

Regular canned beans and a seasoning packet will quietly double or triple the sodium. No-salt-added is the whole trick.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds lean ground turkey
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 bell pepper, diced
- 2 cans no-salt-added beans, rinsed
- 1 can no-salt-added crushed tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 cup water
Method
- Brown the turkey with the onion and pepper until the turkey is cooked through.
- Add beans, tomatoes, spices, and water. Simmer 20 minutes.
- Thin with water if you want it more like a stew for a softer meal.

Storage times are general guidance, not a lab test of this recipe. A shorter package or recipe instruction governs. Freezing and reheating do not rescue food left out too long, or a heat-stable toxin that already formed. USDA FSIS: Leftovers and Food Safety and USDA FSIS: Freezing and Food Safety.

This is the plain roasted chicken you can turn into soup, a salad, or a rice bowl. Do not drown it in dressing on Sunday.
Ingredients
- 1 3/4 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 lemons
- 3 garlic cloves, chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 3 cups cooked rice
- a cucumber, for a side salad
Method
- Heat the oven to 400°F. Toss the chicken with oil, the juice of one lemon, garlic, oregano, and pepper.
- Roast 22–28 minutes, to 165°F in the thickest piece.
- Slice and serve over rice with the second lemon. Cucumber on the side, not mixed in, so tomorrow's lunch is not wet.

Chill cooked rice promptly. Vomiting-type Bacillus cereus illness is generally tied to rice and other starchy foods, and that emetic toxin can survive heat that kills the bacteria. FDA Bad Bug Book: Bacillus cereus.

Details that matter
- One recipe this weekend is enough. A binder that starts with forty blank pages stays blank.
- Copy the card in pencil first if the original is fragile, then write a clean page.
- Ask for the method, not only the ingredients. 'Cook until it looks right' needs a follow-up question.

Recipes with no yield
Write how many people it fed, even if the answer is 'our table of six, with leftovers.'
